Had been in numerous drama classes, and was voted Most Valuable Player in Hockey.
Worked in a hockey rink sharpening skates, and at a pasta restaurant called Patissima.

Enrolled in Toronto High School for the Performing Arts where there were only 25 openings and was accepted. Was later asked to leave due to a disagreement about dramatic technique and inability to follow rules and get along.

Started taking night courses in acting, crashed auditions, worked at Stanislavsky and sense memory, joined the community theater.

Attended the community theater school Leah Posluns. Was twice rejected to join their summer Shakespeare troupe by the judges at the Stratford Festival in Ontario. Spent the summer at Hedgerow Theater in Pennsylvania under the tutelage of Jasper Deeter and was more interested in theater rather than movies.

Struck up a friendship with Alan Powell.
 

1984
 
~~~(April) First real theater gig in the play Wolfboy, a homoerotic play written by Brad Fraser and staged at Toronto's Passe Muraille Theater. Director John Palmer claimed Keanu's diction was a mess (he kept skipping words and pausing at odd moments) and he almost didn't get the part. Keanu played a young innocent in a psych ward being set upon by a boy who believed he was a werewolf. The was the start of the "Is Keanu Gay?" question. Keanu reportedly enjoyed the play because it was 'shocking and offbeat.' The play received bad reviews.

~~~ First professional TV credit: A bit part in the Canadian show Hangin' In, about a youth Counseling center. His line, as a tough street kid was, "Hey, lady. Can I use the shower?"

~~~ Keanu's first agent was Tracy Moore from Noble Talent. Her first bit of advice to Keanu was to utilize the shower. "We didn't want him to be remembered as a smelly, sloppy kid. His attitude was that it didn't have anything to do with his acting ability.

~~~ Did assorted community theater, 2 TV shows: Night Heat (Thug 1) and The Comedy Factory, and two TV Commercials: for Coca Cola and Kellogg's Cornflakes.

~~~ Was asked by Hollywood movie director Steven Stern to audition for the TV movie Young Again.

~~~ (July) Auditioned and won the role of Heaver in the feature film about hockey, Youngblood.

~~~ (October) Won a second film acting role (Tommy) in Canada's Flying a.k.a Dream to Believe, a film about gymnastics.

May 28-June 2) Played Mercutio in Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet at Leah Posluns.

(May) Disney TV movie Young Again released.

Turned down the lead role in Platoon due to a pacifist attitude and an objection to guns and violence, according to director Oliver Stone.

~~~ Played Eddie Talbot in the TV production of "Under the Influence with Andy Griffith.

~~~ Played in the HBO production, Act of Vengeance with Charles Bronson. The director claimed Keanu was 'an upstart' and difficult to work with and reprimanded him severely.

~~~ Did TV movie The Brotherhood of Justice.

~~~ Due to some bad reviews, it was speculated by his managers that Keanu's ethnic name was getting in the way. Some of the new names suggested were : Page Templeton III, Chuck Spidena, and K.C. Reeves. Keanu preferred to introduce himself as Keanu.

~~~ (Dec) Babes in Toyland released for Christmas. Keanu reportedly had an onscreen romance with his co-star, Jill Schoelen. The TV production received bad reviews.

~~~ Release of the controversial cult movie River's Edge, which led to Keanu's first experience with recognition by the public.
 

(1987)-1988 
 
Release of the emotional powerhouse, Permanent Record, which was filmed in Portland, Oregon. Producer Frank Mancuso Jr. commented they were looking for a person (Keanu) who could portray living on the edge and could show real highs and lows. The film was critically acclaimed.

~~~ Turned down the lead in The Fly II and instead chose quirky film, The Prince of Pennsylvania.

~~~ Dangerous Liaisons released. It was Keanu's first real challenge at acting; crying on cue at the opera.

~~~ Somewhere between auditioning for Dangerous Liasions, and winning the part, Keanu had his infamous Topanga Canyon
accident. He was speeding his motorcycle around curves with his lights off (referred to as a 'Demon Ride'). Losing control, he suffered a ruptured spleen, broken ribs and road burn, in addition to a notorious and long surgery scar that runs down the center of his belly.
